Turbines to harness tide power
The Globe and Mail
The Nova Scotia government recently granted environmental clearance for three companies to begin testing technology for large-scale tidal energy production. Each will place a turbine in the Bay of Fundy to produce electricity from incoming and outgoing tides. The turbines will not interfere with shipping lanes and will be closely monitored for environmental effects.
So what? The Bay of Fundy is home to 18-metre tides, the highest tides in the world. An underwater system of hundreds of giant turbines could produce about 100 megawatts, roughly ten percent of the province's energy needs.
