Maybe new rabies treatment

EurekAlert

Clinical trials are testing a new rabies treatment - a human monoclonal antibody produced using transgenic mice. If successful, it could replace human rabies immune globulin, which is derived from human blood. Partnered with the rabies vaccine, it is currently the only way to prevent infection after exposure to rabies.

So what?

Every year, rabies kills about 55,000 people who might have been saved if they had access to the expensive human rabies immune globulin. If this new antibody works out, it means more available and affordable treatment for the rabies disease.
