Moisture on the Moon
EurekAlert.org
Instruments on a satellite circling the Moon have detected water on its surface. Thought to be formed by hydrogen from the Sun bonding with oxygen in the Moon's soil, the trace amounts of water add up to an estimated litre per tonne of soil. That's still more water than scientists assumed was on the Moon after analyzing rocks brought back by Apollo astronauts 40 years ago.
So what?Scientists hope that further investigation will reveal bigger deposits of water trapped in lunar craters. In large enough quantities, water could be used for drinking and growing crops, or broken up into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen for fuel.
