Nanocapsules to the rescue
ScienceDaily.com
Researchers have developed a wound dressing that uses nanotechnology to kill bacteria. The dressing works by releasing antibiotics from nanocapsules triggered by the presence of disease-causing bacteria. Once the antibiotic is released, the dressing also changes colour, alerting healthcare professionals that an infection is present.
So what? This could revolutionize treatment of burns patients, particularly children, where infections can lead to potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome. And releasing antibiotics only when needed could reduce the risk of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
